A team of Brock University students won the second annual University of Waterloo Sport Management Case Competition on Friday, Nov 2. Students enrolled in Sport Management-related disciplines from across Ontario were given the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom about business operations to real-life issues faced by an international sport organization. Participants were provided with a case problem surrounding the national championships USports host and needed to create excitement around hosting these events. They then had to go on to evaluate the successes and downfalls for host regions. “It was a fantastic opportunity to represent Brock University and the Department of Sport Management,” Brock team co-captain David Stark says. “Our team is thrilled to have our suggestions selected by Usports and taken into consideration for improving their national championship format and adding excitement surrounding their smaller championships.” This one-day event included working sessions, one-on-one meetings with a representative from USports and two rounds of presentations to a panel of judges from within the field. “It was a fun and engaging day that gave us an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge we have learned in our SPMA classes to a current industry problem,” Brock team co-captain Rob Cheevers shared. “I got to meet two people from our program that I hadn’t worked with before and we all contributed to the win.”
