Brock University instructor in lab coat in chemistry lab setting lights a crucible of powdered chemicals on fire to produce bright green firework effect. The instructor stands to the right of the fume hood wearing safety goggles and medical mask. Brock Lab Co-ordinator/Instructor Sergio Paone demonstrated the chemistry behind bright colours in fireworks during Scientifically Yours, which welcomed more than 50 Ontario high school students to campus May 6. The two-day event, which offered virtual programming May 5, is designed to encourage students to pursue an education, and ultimately a career, in science. During the ”Flames, Fireworks and Explosions” lab demonstration, barium and the ingredients for gunpowder were lit to produce a brilliant green hue. Students learned how adding different chemicals to the mixture produces varying colours. Scientifically Yours included 15 different projects for students to participate in, exploring a myriad of scientific endeavours. The event also included a keynote speech, scavenger hunt and panel discussion, and culminated on May 6 with a dinner where students were able to network with science mentors, speakers, sponsors and guests.
