Brock Lab Co-ordinator/Instructor Sergio Paone demonstrated the chemistry behind bright colours in fireworks during Scientifically Yours, which welcomed more than 50 Ontario high school students to campus May 6. The two-day event, which offered virtual programming May 5, is designed to encourage students to pursue an education, and ultimately a career, in science. During the ”Flames, Fireworks and Explosions” lab demonstration, barium and the ingredients for gunpowder were lit to produce a brilliant green hue. Students learned how adding different chemicals to the mixture produces varying colours. Scientifically Yours included 15 different projects for students to participate in, exploring a myriad of scientific endeavours. The event also included a keynote speech, scavenger hunt and panel discussion, and culminated on May 6 with a dinner where students were able to network with science mentors, speakers, sponsors and guests.
