Nicole Gavin and Helen Hsu, graduate students with the Department of Classics, were camera ready Wednesday, Jan. 17 for #MuseumSelfie Day. The department’s Cypriote Museum had artifacts and props on display for students taking selfies. Gavin holds a 3D-printed replica of a limestone bust in the museum’s collection. The department’s collection includes 173 objects from the neolithic to medieval periods on Cyprus and includes recent additions of 3D-printed replicas. An annual online celebration of museums and galleries, #MuseumSelfie Day encourages people to engage with artifacts and art. Museums around the world participate by hosting celebrations and encouraging selfies. Participants share their selfies on Twitter and Instagram with the event hashtag, #museumselfie. Founded by London, U.K., museum blogger Mar Dixon in 2014, the event is intended to be a fun way to highlight the need for culture in communities.
