History through beads

Sherri Vansickle, Assistant Professor of Indigenous Educational Studies, shared her knowledge of how Elders use beads to ensure a good life for Indigenous youth during a talk on Nov. 20 at the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre. Vansickle, who is from the Onondaga Nation, Eel Clan, Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, spoke to community about the significance of the Hiawatha Belt and its important role in Haudenosaunee history and Two Row Wampum Treaty. The sacred belt offers teachings in governance, politics, child-rearing and moral and ethical behaviour. Vansickle also spoke about the Two Row, filled with teachings about how Indigenous and non-Indigenous people can support each other in peace, peace, friendship and respect.
