GIS Day attracted a large crowd of geography enthusiasts and curious passersby to the Map, Data and GIS Library to share in the celebrations, contests, pizza and cake on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Even Boomer made an appearance! Thanks goes out to our many donors (Gibson Library, BUGS, Geography, BUSU, Starbucks, Puddy's Bar & Grill, Campus Bookstore, Rec Services & ESRI). As part of Geography Awareness Week, the Map, Data & GIS Library (MC-C306) hosted its annual celebration highlighting four students competing for the Canada $1,000 ESRI Scholarship. They presented their GIS project proposal in hopes of winning the cash, plus ArcGIS software, and the priceless prestige! The winner is to be announced in the new year. Good luck students! GIS Day promotes the many uses around campus to visualize information. Maps and mapping technologies are fundamental to many industries including: health sciences, urban planning, geology, natural disaster management, business & marketing, environmental studies, climate change, emergency response, transportation, history, biology, and so on. If data has a geographic location, we can map it. They say "A picture is worth a thousand words"...I say "A map is worth a million!"
