Digging deep into Brock’s history

Not many people know that underneath Brock University exists a network of tunnels. During the earliest stages of Brock University's development in the '60s, a tunnel services system was constructed across most of the campus to connect the planned Schmon Tower and Central Utilities Building and any buildings to come later. These tunnels deliver power, communications, domestic water, heating and cooling water, and can be used by maintenance personnel to reach their destinations. Except for a small bridge at the Central Utilities Building, the tunnel services system is invisible — until now. As part of the Brock LINC project, and in order to make connections for the heating and cooling systems, construction personnel uncovered a portion of the tunnel that hasn't been seen since the Schmon Tower was built . "Uncovering the tunnel and the structure around it for the first time since the Tower was built is an historic revelation for Facilities Management personnel who work constantly to maintain, grow and improve the physical environment of the campus," says Scott Roper, Project Manager, Campus Planning, Design and Construction.
