‘CHYS Day’ a sign of things to come

The department of Child and Youth Studies (CHYS) at Brock University recently hosted a class of Grade 11 students from Laura Secord Secondary School for the first annual ‘CHYS Day’ as part of its student outreach initiative in conjunction with the Office of Recruitment and Liaison Services. Shauna Pomerantz, Associate Professor in CHYS and Alison Lahn, undergraduate advisor for CHYS co-organized ‘CHYS Day’ in order to reach out to high school students and show them what the department of Child and Youth Studies – and Brock – are all about. Pomerantz and Zopito Marini, Professor in CHYS, gave a sample lecture on bullying through developmental psychology and socio-cultural lenses followed by a sample seminar to discuss the lecture. The Office of Recruitment and Liaison Services at Brock then treated the students to lunch in the Guernsey Market and a fun and informative scavenger hunt across the campus. “It was great to connect with the students and teachers from Laura Secord Secondary School,” says Lahn. “The students were very thankful they had the opportunity to come for the day and we look forward to hosting more of these types of initiatives in the future here in CHYS.” The Department of Child and Youth studies plans to expand its student outreach initiative next year and invite students across the DSBN to attend ‘CHYS Day’ and experience Brock.
