Bill Davis played key role in Brock’s history

The late William Davis, 18th premier of Ontario, is seen in this photo from June 5, 1963 alongside Brock University administrators and government officials. The University Founders’ Committee announced that a 637-acre piece of land on the Niagara escarpment would be the location for which Brock University would be built. The photo is taken on what is now home to Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre. Davis, who was Ontario’s Education Minister at the time, is pictured to the immediate left of the map. Arthur A. Schmon, Founders’ Committee Chairman and namesake of Brock’s Schmon Tower, is pictured to the immediate right of the map. A year after the photo was taken, Davis took on additional responsibilities as Ontario’s inaugural Minister of University Affairs. Davis passed away Sunday, Aug. 8 at the age of 92 due to natural causes.
