PhD student Kim Radersma was spotted with Brock's perplexing backwards bike last week on her way to an equity conference for teachers in the Durham District School Board. The bike is modified so the steering is backwards to what one expects — to turn the bike right, one must turn the steering to the left. 

Radersma, who is in the Education Studies program, researches and teaches on systemic racism in schools, focusing on white teacher identity, privilege and complicity. In addition to teaching at Brock, Radersma speaks to teachers and school administrators throughout southern Ontario, inviting them to understand the impact their whiteness has in a pluralistic society. She uses the bike to challenge riders to think about their own learned behaviours and biases.

The Brock Bike was made by Education Professor Robert McGray in 2015 with the help of Brock’s machine shop.
