Stuart Buchanan, left, who receives his BA Sociology this fall at Brock convocation, and Nick Rowe (BPhys Ed, '15) are also Thorold volunteer firefighters, and last weekend competed among hundreds of Canadian and U.S. colleagues at the regional Firefit Championship in Oshawa. Competitors faced challenges like carrying a 20-kg (45-lb) bundle of fire hose up a five-storey tower; moving a fully pressurized fire hose 23 metres then hitting a target with the water jet; and dragging a 75-kg (165-lb) mannequin 30 metres to safety. The Brock pair scored well enough to advance to next week's national Firefit Championships in Ottawa. During his Brock career, Rowe was the 2014-15 athlete of the year, captain of the men's wrestling team and a national wrestling gold medallist.
