Work by Catherine Mondloch, shown above in a Brock file photo, will receive part of $727,012 in research funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation.

Five Brock research projects will benefit from $727,012 in funding recently announced by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI).

Projects focusing on aging, human health and materials science will receive the funding, announced Dec. 18 in Kingston by Gary Goodyear, federal Minister of State (Science and Technology).

Brock researchers and their awards include:

  • Catherine Mondloch, professor, Psychology, $170,790 for “The Development of Face Perception”
  • Fereidoon Razavi, professor, Physics, $245,850 for “The Physical Property Management System (PPMS) for Research on Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Materials and Thin Films of Compounds”
  • Sidney Segalowitz, professor, Psychology, $35,965 for “Neurovisceral Models of Mental Health and Personality”
  • Ayda Tekok-Kilic, assistant professor, Child and Youth Studies, $125,617 for “An Electrophysiological Approach to the Developmental Trajectories of Working Memory Functions”
  • Craig Tokuno, assistant professor, Physical Education and Kinesiology, $148,790 for “Establishment of the Balance and Gait Laboratory to Investigate the Neural Strategies Used for Postural and Locomotor Control”

The investments in Brock “further enhance our country’s reputation as a destination of choice for outstanding researchers,” Dr. Eliot Phillipson, president and CEO of the CFI, said in a media release Friday.

The money is part of a $59-million announcement supporting 262 projects at 40 Canadian research institutions. It supports work by 351 researchers.

Is it just me or did Brock kind-of get shafted here? Sure, 700 grand sounds nice, but it represents only 1.2% of the overall announced funding. That falls far short of the 2.5% one might have expected (a 1/40 share). I am not particularly impressed or excited.
