Through a foundational course this spring, students will have the opportunity to learn about the basic principles of physics.Brock University’s spring courses are pulling back the curtain on forces that make the world go around.
Students in PHYS 1P90 — Foundations of Physics with Laboratory will explore how physics principles apply to their everyday lives, from walking or driving to using a smartphone.
PHYS 1P90 is designed to equip students who didn’t do physics in high school with foundational knowledge that “helps build momentum for understanding how the universe works,” says Edward Sternin, Acting Chair of the Physics Department.
During the course, students will have the opportunity to develop their math and problem-solving skills and build their confidence studying the fundamentals of physics.
Topics covered include a thorough foundation of mechanics: kinematics (the description of motion), statics (forces in balance), dynamics (the causes of motion) in one and two dimensions, rotational motion, momentum; as well as an introduction to electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity.
“Newton’s laws of motion apply equally well to the mechanical world and to the ‘human machine,’ and PHYS 1P90 is helpful to those students aiming to pursue studies in medicine, physiotherapy or kinesiology,” says Sternin.
For those looking to understand the movement of the stock market, especially in a time of economic turbulence, MATH 2P75 Introductory to Financial Math offers students a chance to increase their financial literacy.
“This course is highly relevant for students who need a solid understanding of financial math, such as aspiring teachers and business professionals,” says William Marshall, Professor and Co-Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Students will brush up on equations and learn to calculate mathematical models used in finance and insurance, including tariffs, compound interest, annuities, mortgages, the time-value of money and measures of risk. They will also be introduced to stocks, bonds and options.
Beyond building their financial math skills, students will be equipped to understand patterns and trends, analyze information and make data-driven predictions and decisions.
