New Spring/Summer chemistry course a winning formula for budding scientists

For students who didn’t mix well with chemistry in high school or others fresh to the field, Brock University is offering a new solution to bring them up to speed.

A new Spring/Summer course, CHEM 1P00 Introductory Chemistry, will help students to build their knowledge of chemistry’s fundamental principles.

From basic chemical calculations to the periodic table and the atomic structure, the course will help to broaden students’ understanding of the science behind everyday phenomena.

Although they often go unnoticed, chemical reactions are a part of everyday life, occurring in the surrounding environment and even within our bodies, says Paul Zelisko, Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry.

“Chemistry offers a fascinating look into what elements the world — and everything in it — is made up of and how those elements interact with one another,” he says. “It gives you a different perspective on life and for many, sparks a passion for science.”

In addition to meeting a course requirement that may be needed on the path to graduation, taking CHEM 1P00 Introductory Chemistry provides the opportunity to cultivate critical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, contributing to a solid foundation for a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
