Brock University will join the global Earth Hour initiative by switching off its lights to conserve energy and raise awareness about climate change.
Non-essential lighting across campus will be powered down from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.
The international event, organized by the World Wildlife Fund since 2007, encourages individuals and institutions to reduce energy consumption and reflect on ways to support environmental sustainability.
Brock will turn off or reduce lighting in key areas across campus, including:
- Turning off lights illuminating the main entrance sign, the bronze statue of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock in front of Schmon Tower, and the library floors and Schmon Tower ribbon lighting.
- Turning off, where it is safe to do so, non-emergency lighting in the Roy and Lois Cairns Health and Bioscience Research Complex. Lighting will be manually turned off in all labs that are able to participate as well as the pendant lighting at the building’s east end.
- Reducing lighting in the Central Utilities Building to a minimum.
- Dimming lights in the Rankin Family Pavilion Atrium.
Students, staff and community members are encouraged to join participants in more than 190 countries by switching off their lights and taking an hour to consider how small changes can contribute to a more sustainable future.
