Members of the Brock and wider Niagara community came together this week to celebrate Pride Month and the ongoing local work to improve equality in the region.
Hosted by Pride Niagara on June 5, the 11th annual Niagara Unity Awards honoured individuals and organizations that have made an impact on the local Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (2SLGBTQ+) communities.
Brock is a proud sponsor of Pride Niagara. Tim Kenyon, the University’s Interim Provost and Vice-President, Academic, spoke during the event, highlighting diversity, inclusion and the vibrant 2SLGBTQ+ community in Niagara while acknowledging the ongoing journey towards equality.
Representatives from the University’s gay-straight alliance (GSA) student club, Brock Pride, were also at the ceremony to receive the Outstanding School GSA Unity award. Brock Pride was one of five GSA school groups nominated for the award. Current Brock Pride President Barbara Kuchar, a part-time student, and Vice-President Mina Bello, a fourth-year Women’s and Gender Studies student, accepted the award on behalf of the club.
