New policy to enhance safety standards for Brock drivers

A new policy is aiming to enhance the safety of those using Brock vehicles or travelling for University-sanctioned activities.

The Driver and Vehicle Management Policy and related Procedures will expand the process the University uses to ensure the safety of all employees driving Brock fleet vehicles, rentals or personal vehicles while taking part in Brock-sanctioned activities.

Implemented by University Risk Management in response to insurance industry best practices, the policy is intended to confirm that all authorized drivers have been properly vetted and have a safe driving record to minimize potential risk to drivers and passengers. To do this, employees must complete the Driver Authorization application process within Workday, including agreeing to Appendix 1 on that form.

Having come into effect in early November, the policy is now live and must be completed by anyone driving a Brock-owned vehicle or for those driving more than three times in one year for University-sanctioned activities.

Brock’s Director of Enterprise Risk Management Frank Marcella said the policy will allow for a standardized approach to safe transport at Brock.

“University Risk Management now has the ability to verify that all drivers, especially those transporting passengers, are safe drivers by applying a set of standards consistently across the University and verifying driver status,” he said.

Job aids have been created in Workday to support the application completion process for Brock employees.

The job aids can be found by clicking on the SharePoint driver authorization links for new hires and for existing employees.

Applications for anyone who is not a Brock employee can be emailed to riskmanagement@brocku.ca.
