Brock science profs to discuss Nobel Prizes at free event

Members of the Brock community are invited to a lunchtime event discussing recent Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics and medicine.

Organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Science, Nobel Prize Learn at Lunch will feature four 15-minute talks from Brock researchers who will break down the complex scientific concepts behind the ground-breaking research and highlight potential applications that could revolutionize the future.

  • Professor of Chemistry Georgii Nikonov will discuss the history and significance of the Nobel Prizes.
  • Assistant Professor of Chemistry Jianbo Gao will speak about the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov for the discovery and development of quantum dots.
  • Professor of Physics Thad Harroun will discuss the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter.
  • Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Ian Patterson will talk about the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their discoveries concerning base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.

The Nobel Prize Learn at Lunch event takes place Tuesday, Oct. 17 from noon to 1 p.m. in Pond Inlet. All Brock faculty, students and staff are invited to attend. A background in science is not required.

Attendees are welcome to bring their lunch and enjoy it while they listen to the presentations.
