Applications open for BUSU mural competition

The popular General Brock store is getting a makeover this summer — with the help of student artists.

The Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU), which owns and operates the store, is inviting undergraduate students to participate in a mural competition that will see the winner receive a $500 prize and the opportunity to showcase their work on a large wall inside the student-run space.

The competition is part of a series of upcoming updates for the convenience store and attached coffee shop and lounge located in Welch Hall.

“Our hope is that the mural will reflect the space’s culture as a microcosm of the larger Brock student community, making it even more welcoming to all students, and providing a colourful and fun photo opportunity,” said BUSU President James Maxwell-Barillas.

The space’s distinct offerings will include Booster Juice, GB Convenience Store, Grab-and-go and Badger’s Brew Café and lounge, which will serve a range of espresso beverages, bagels and other freshly baked goods.

“GB is one of the best spots on campus to grab a coffee or a snack, and hang out during the semester,” said Maxwell-Barillas. “It’s a place of opportunity and community for many students. Whether you’re hanging out in the lounge meeting new friends, or earning and learning behind the counter, everyone loves and is welcomed by the laidback nature and friendly atmosphere of this student-powered space. Plus, as one BUSU’s social enterprises, all profits go back to providing jobs and support for students.”

Applications close for the GB Mural Competition Wednesday, July 12. Visit the BUSU website to learn more.
