From recreating ancient Olympic competitions to trying their hand at pottery making, high school students from across Ontario will bring the world of classical antiquity to life at Brock later this week.
More than 200 Latin students and Classics Club members from 13 schools will gather for the annual Ontario Students Classics Conference (OSCC) from Thursday, May 11 to Saturday, May 13. This year, traffic around Isaac Brock Circle will be disrupted from 4 to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 12 for the conference’s signature student chariot race.
Traffic will be stopped in the following areas during each lap of the race:
- The corner of Isaac Brock Boulevard North and Flora Egerter Way
- Isaac Brock Boulevard West before it reaches Isaac Brock Circle
- The exit from Lot D
Brock staff will also redirect vehicles through Zone 3 to minimize the impact of traffic on the chariot race.
Students at OSCC participate in a range of academic, athletic and artistic events designed to help them develop a deeper understanding of the classical world. They will also attend a series of classics lectures offered by faculty members from Brock, McMaster University, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Ottawa.
The conference wraps up with an awards ceremony and a traditional costume parade, or pompa, on Saturday.
Now in its 52nd year, this is the first time the OSCC has taken place since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is hosted by three Toronto-based schools: St. Clements School, Lawrence Park Collegiate and Humberside Collegiate.
