BUSU recruiting mentors to aid student refugees’ transition to Brock

The Brock University Students’ Union is looking for students who are ready to lend a helping hand to their peers.

Each year, BUSU partners with Brock’s World University Service of Canada (WUSC) committee to sponsor student refugees who are new Canadian residents so they may continue their studies at Brock.

BUSU partners with one or two student refugees each year and supports them throughout the entirety of their studies.

To continue this program, BUSU is looking for WUSC Committee members to mentor and aid incoming students for the 2023-24 school year.

WUSC mentors will help to aid students with social and academic support by helping them to navigate their way through Brock and St. Catharines, as well as connecting them with clubs and academic resources they may be interested in.

BUSU Vice-President, Student Services Yasmine Hejazi said she is hopeful numerous mentors will embrace the chance to welcome students who are new to Brock and Canada.

“Being a mentor for new Canadian students is not only a chance to make a difference in someone’s life, but It’s an opportunity to learn, grow and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures and experiences,” she said. “By providing guidance, support and friendship, we can create a safe space for these students to flourish in their new educational environment.”

WUSC is a Canadian non-profit organization that partners with universities across the country to achieve its goals of increasing youth education, empowerment and economic opportunity. The Brock WUSC committee focuses primarily on the WUSC Student Refugee Program. Brock WUSC also hosts events to raise awareness and funds for other WUSC programs throughout the year.

Anyone interested in becoming a Brock WUSC member or learning more about the WUSC committee can register on the Brock WUSC website.
