Brock Badgers to host community food drive at weekend games

The Brock Badgers and their student-athletes are collecting food donations for Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold at this weekend’s games.

The Badgers are accepting non-perishable food items at the ticket table during seven home games. The initiative began with the Brock men’s and women’s basketball teams hosting the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 11.

Those donating a non-perishable food item at the ticket table will be entered to win a Brock Badgers Prize Pack, which includes a Badgers backpack, T-shirt and more.

“We are grateful to partner with the Brock community. They’re an important part of this initiative that makes a difference in the lives of those who need it most,” said Community Care’s Chief Executive Officer Betty-Lou Souter. “We are grateful to connect with a caring community that complements the work we do to help the most vulnerable.”

An initiative led by the Student-Athlete Leadership Council (SALC), the food drive is an opportunity to help Community Care fill its shelves with items such as canned meat (corned beef, flaked ham or poultry), juices, canned fruit, granola bars or as the agency’s motto states: ‘whatever you place on your table is what we need on ours.’

“The SALC is proud to partner with Community Care and do our part to help the Niagara region and the community,” said SALC co-president Meera Sayal of the women’s volleyball team. “We are always looking for opportunities to create a stronger bond with our local community. We look forward to collecting donations that will help others who are in need.”

In addition to Friday’s games, the Brock University and wider Niagara community can donate non-perishable food items at the following Badgers games:

Saturday, Nov. 12 – Women’s hockey vs Windsor (Canada Games Park), 4 p.m.; women’s and men’s basketball vs Lakehead (Bob Davis Gym), 6 and 8 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 13 – Women’s and men’s volleyball vs Guelph (Bob Davis Gym), 1 and 3 p.m.
