Annual asbestos reassessment starts Thursday at Brock

Brock University will begin its annual asbestos reassessment this week.

Contractors from Pinchin Ltd. will be conducting a room-by-room reassessment of asbestos-containing materials at Brock University’s campuses in St. Catharines and Hamilton starting Thursday, July 21. Daily work hours are scheduled to take place Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. until Tuesday, Aug. 16. A detailed schedule can be found on SharePoint.

Annual asbestos reassessments are a requirement of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and help to ensure Brock’s asbestos inventory is accurate and up to date.

As part of the asbestos reassessment process, Brock’s Health, Safety and Wellness staff will accompany Pinchin consultants on a visual walk-through inspection to evaluate any changes in the condition of previously identified asbestos-containing materials. In rare cases, they will collect small bulk samples. Building occupants should notice very little activity or disruption.

All individuals involved will be taking proper health and safety precautions and controls in accordance with applicable legislation to eliminate any risk of exposure.

The Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts is excluded from the reassessment, as all confirmed asbestos was abated during the renovations to the building.

Questions about the annual asbestos reassessment, including considerations regarding equipment, materials, access or special arrangements, can be emailed to the Health, Safety and Wellness team at besafe@brocku.ca

More information about the University’s asbestos management program can be found in the Environmental Safety section of the Health, Safety and Wellness Toolbox on SharePoint.
