January kindness calendar focuses on mindfulness

Take a break to watch the clouds roll by. Eat food slowly. Start the day with conscious awareness.

These are three examples of daily actions Brock employees can take this month as part of the workplace kindness calendar, a year-long initiative of kindness, compassion and self-care created by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.

Brock University is encouraging faculty and staff to make kindness the norm by using the calendar to help create a caring and considerate working environment. The calendar can be used individually by employees or incorporated into team communications, such as meetings, manager updates and newsletters.

The theme for January is mindfulness, which is the act of maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and the surrounding environment.

Upcoming themes include kindness in February, self-awareness and self-love in March, and caring for the environment in April.

In addition to the actions suggested on each day of the calendar, there are several kindness resources and tips on the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation website.

Questions regarding Brock’s involvement with the initiative can be directed to Health Management and Wellness at employeehealth@brocku.ca
