Thesis defences — April 26 to April 30

The following is a list of thesis defences taking place virtually from Monday, April 26 to Friday, April 30.

Chemistry PhD thesis defences

Guan Alex Wang, a PhD candidate in Chemistry, will defend his thesis “Dynamic DNA Nanotechnology for Probing Single Nucleotide Variants and DNA Modifications” on Tuesday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. via video conference.

The examination committee includes Brian Roy, Chair; Feng Li, Supervisor; Hanadi Sleiman, External Examiner (McGill University); Jeff Stuart, Internal Examiner; and Melanie Pilkington and Georgii Nikonov, Committee Members.

Ivor Smajlagic, a PhD candidate in Chemistry, will defend his thesis “Synthesis of Cyclopropenium-Appended Organocatalysts and Applications” on Friday, April 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. via video conference.

The examination committee includes Brian Roy, Chair; Travis Dudding, Supervisor; Michael Denk, External Examiner (University of Guelph); Francine McCarthy, Internal Examiner; and Paul Zelisko and Art van der Est, Committee Members.

Critical Sociology MA thesis defences

Tim Hayslip, a Master of Arts in Critical Sociology candidate, will defend his thesis “Dialectical Naturalism: Studies in Marxist Social Ontology” on Monday, April 26 at 2 p.m. via video conference.

The examination committee includes Dawn Zinga, Chair; Murray Smith, Supervisor; William Carroll, External Examiner (Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Victoria); Jane Helleiner, Graduate Program Director; and Dennis Soron and and Jonah Butovsky, Committee Members.

Amy Webster, a Master of Arts in Critical Sociology candidate, will defend her thesis “Experiences of YMCA Day Camp Counsellors and their Perceptions of Youth” on Thursday, April 29 at 1 p.m. via video conference.
