Webinar to look at ‘Who’s on First’ as communications teaching tool

A Goodman School of Business Professor plans to show how a classic comedy sketch can be used for more than simply entertainment during an upcoming webinar.

On Friday, Jan. 29, Mark Julien, Professor of Human Resource Management, will discuss ‘Who’s on First’ by legendary comedy duo Abbott and Costello as a communications teaching tool.

Part of the Goodman School of Business Luncheon Speaker Series, Julien will present co-authored research that explores using the classic video clip to teach students about communication barriers and basic workplace communication concepts.

He says the valuable new teaching tool is especially relevant now as instructors search for new ways to engage their students in an online learning environment.

“Now that we’ve moved to pandemic teaching and teaching online, a lot of the traditional exercises that we would have used to talk about communication barriers, we can’t do now,” Julien said. “The beauty of a video clip is that it works with synchronous and asynchronous online education.”

The webinar presentation, ‘Who’s on first: A new way to teach communication,’ will take place Friday, Jan. 29 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. via Lifesize.

The Goodman School of Business Luncheon Speaker Series provides Goodman faculty, staff and students with an informal opportunity to listen to and discuss recent advances in research, teaching and practices with international business colleagues.
