Virtual Spring Convocation launches Friday: What you need to know

Unlike a traditional Convocation ceremony, being late to Brock University’s 2020 Spring Convocation won’t mean sprinting to Ian Beddis Gymnasium in dress clothes.

The first virtual Convocation in the University’s 56-year history launches Friday, June 19 for nearly 3,000 graduands.

Rather than a traditional celebration, Brock’s 107th Convocation will be a web-based portal where each graduand will get a tailored experience based on their Faculty, and whether they’re an undergraduate or graduate student.

The Virtual Convocation experience will include video messages from University President Gervan Fearon, Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo, keynote speaker and former Prime Minister Paul Martin, one of five people receiving honorary degrees during Convocation, and many other special guests.

The Class of 2020 will receive invitations to their personal Virtual Spring Convocation portal Friday morning from the Dean of their Faculty.

Graduands can choose to visit the webpage immediately and enjoy the experience with their friends and family on the day it launches, or they can wait and visit their Convocation portal whenever it’s convenient for them.

While graduands will have their degrees officially conferred by Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo on Friday, their physical degree parchments will arrive in the mail in the coming weeks. Students who have requested to have their diploma mailed will receive a package that will include the degree, a Convocation program, an alumni pin, a bag of Class of 2020 confetti, and a few other items. To join the mailing list and to confirm your mailing address, please make sure to check off the “mail out” option on the Intent to Graduate section of the Brock Portal.

We also encourage you to show off your Brock pride! Download #BrockUGrad themed wallpapers, Facebook and Twitter cover photos, and profile picture frames at brocku.ca/convocation/celebrate

To purchase Brock degree frames or swag such as the new ‘Home of a Brock grad’ lawn signs, visit the Brock Campus Store’s Class of 2020 section online.

For faculty, staff and others who want to see what Brock’s Virtual Spring Convocation is all about, an invitation will go out on Monday, June 22. This will allow the Class of 2020 and their families and friends to visit the portal and celebrate throughout the weekend.

In the meantime, watch for a full slate of Convocation stories starting now in The Brock News and running through the next 10 days.
