A Star Is Born delivers new take on iconic love story

Fresh off a win for Best Original Song at Sunday’s Oscars, A Star Is Born will this week grace the screen of the Film House in downtown St. Catharines.

The latest offering of the Brock University Film Society (BUFS), the fan-favourite remake will be shown Thursday, Feb. 28, sharing the tale of two artistic souls who come together on stage and in life.

Four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (American Sniper, American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) makes his directorial debut and also stars alongside multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar Lady Gaga in her first leading role in a major motion picture.

Cooper portrays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls in love with struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has given up on her dream to become a successful singer, until she meets Jack, who immediately sees her natural talent. Theirs is a complex journey through the beauty and heartbreak of a relationship struggling to survive.

The Hollywood Reporter calls A Star Is Born “a durable tale of romance, heady fame and crushing tragedy, retold for a new generation with heart and grit.”

The success of the film relies on the chemistry between the two leads and, according to TheWrap, “Cooper and Lady Gaga are dynamite together.”

Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9.50 or $7 for members, plus tax. Memberships are available through the Film House website.

Visit the BUFS web page for a full list of this season’s selections. A calendar of films coming to the PAC over the next few months is posted on the Film House website. Look for the red B that indicates a BUFS-hosted screening.

For more than 40 years, the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film has hosted the film society (previously known as a series) to bring some of the best in independent, international and Canadian cinema to St. Catharines.
