BUSU takes Cardiff concert downtown

The Brock University Students’ Union wants to bring its concerts to the heart of St. Catharines.

In an effort to get closer to where students are living, and to attract more community members to its events, BUSU is partnering with the new Warehouse Concert Hall run by Brock alumnus Erik Dickson for an upcoming concert.

BUSU regular Craig Cardiff, a talented Canadian singer/songwriter, will perform Tuesday, Feb. 13 at a show organized by BUSU, but hosted at Warehouse. It’s the first time the students’ union has hosted a concert outside the confines of Isaac’s Bar and Grill.

“Typically we have events only for students, but we are trying new ways of growing our community,” said Curtis Bell, Programming and Events Manager for BUSU. “Going to a downtown venue close to where students are living will also make for a better turnout.”

With a smaller capacity than Isaac’s, Bell said Warehouse also makes sense for a Cardiff show, which typically draws a smaller, but loyal crowd.

“The smaller venue works to our advantage. With the intimacy of Craig’s shows, it will be a better experience for students and staff who come out.”

As he has done in the past, Cardiff will host a music workshop for Brock students at the University on Tuesday, Feb. 13 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Student Justice Centre. For the Warehouse show that night, Brock student Nicole Henderson will open with an acoustic set starting at 7:30 p.m. before Cardiff hits the stage at 8 p.m.

Tickets are available on Ticketyfly.com at $5 for Brock students or $15 in advance and $20 at the door for general admission. Students interested in registering for Cardiff’s workshop should contact Bell at cbell@brockbusu.ca

This likely won’t be the last time BUSU heads off campus to host a concert, Bell said.

“We’re open to all ideas, whether it’s a venue like Warehouse or using a park,” he said. “I think we need to explore what we do with BUSU and provide more alternative programming that connects students with the community.”
