Brock University Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo and Board of Trustees Chair Gary Comerford extended their greetings this week to Gervan Fearon, who was in his first week as Brock’s new President and Vice-Chancellor.
“Whatcha!,” Cheechoo, who is of Cree heritage, wrote in an open note to the President. “It is my honour to welcome to Brock University President Dr. Gervan Fearon and his family.
“You have worked hard to be here, you have sacrificed a lot to be here and you fought for your health to be here, and I want to say how proud I am to be part of your journey at Brock University. We have a long ladder to climb to indigenizing, and to clear the path for all individuals regardless of race to achieve their goals, and I believe your leadership at Brock will be extraordinary and nurturing to many such programs.
“It is very nice to have someone with your academic and cultural pedigree join the Brock family. Congratulations!”
Comerford, who was elected Board Chair in June, also headed up the committee that oversaw Brock’s presidential search last winter and spring.
“Dr. Fearon is a tremendous addition to the Brock family,” said Comerford.
“On behalf of the Board, we are all extremely pleased to have such an experienced and perceptive leader in this important role at the University. The Brock community has many reasons to be excited about its future, and we at the Board look forward to working with President Fearon in pursuing a course characterized by growth and success.”
