Brock community encouraged to support Rankin Cancer Run

Dozens of members of the Brock community will lace up in support of local cancer care this weekend.

The annual Rankin Cancer Run is expected to draw thousands of people to Grantham Lions Club in St. Catharines on Saturday, May 27.

More than 30 people have already joined Brock’s team for the popular event and organizers are confident that number will only continue to grow come Saturday.

“It’s not too late to register,” said Kristen Smith, Brock’s Manager of Community Outreach Programs with Student Life and Community Experiences, who is hoping to see a sea of familiar faces from the University along the running route.

Prakisha Pradhan, who is helping to round up Brock’s runners and walkers, urged people to get outside and cheer on the University’s team.

“Everything raised supports cancer care in the Niagara region. It’s a great cause,” she said.

Brock’s team has already collected more than $400 in donations but is eager to see that number climb for the worthy cause.

In addition to a team participating in the walk, nearly 70 students from Brock’s International Centre will be lending a helping hand and volunteering their time at the event, which was founded 12 years ago by Brock alumna Mary Ann Edwards.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. followed by the run at 10.

Participants can choose to walk or run the available one- or three-kilometre routes that go through Port Weller along the Welland Canal.

To register to be a part of Brock’s team or to make a donation, visit the Rankin Cancer Run website and search for the team name Brock University.

Registration, which includes an event T-shirt and barbecue lunch, is $10 for students and $20 for all other participants.

The 2016 event brought in record donations, with $1 million raised to support cancer care in Niagara.  In its history, the run has raised more than $6.5 million.
