Badgers improve to fourth in Canada ahead of Ontario Championships

The Brock Badgers are off to the Final Four.

The fourth-ranked Brock University men’s basketball team will take on the top-ranked Carleton Ravens Friday, March 3 at 5 p.m. in the Ontario University Athletics Wilson Cup Semi-Finals in Ottawa.

The winner will advance to the OUA finals Saturday at 8 p.m. against either Ottawa (2) or Ryerson (3), and earn a guaranteed berth into the U Sports National Championships in Halifax. The loser will play for OUA bronze Saturday at 6 p.m.

Brock brings a 15-4 regular season record into the semi-final while the Ravens went a perfect 19-0 in OUA action.

The Badgers are led by fourth-year forward and 2016 All-Canadian Dani Elgadi, the lone player to register a double-double in the OUA this past season averaging 14.7 points per game and 10.3 rebounds. He also added 3.1 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.

Former CIS Rookie of the Year Johneil Simpson continues to be a key to the Badgers success averaging 13.2 PPG and 4.66 RPG off the bench. Ryan Bennett (9.2 PPG, 2.9 RPG), Cassidy Ryan (9.0 PPG, 3.3 RPG) Tyler Brown (7.5 PPG, 3.4 APG) and rookie standout Daniel Cayer (8.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG) have all had strong seasons, and look to extend it further this weekend.

Carleton had three players finish in double figures led by fifth year senior Connor Wood who averaged 19.2 PPG. Also in double digits were Kaza Kajami-Keane (15.5 PPG) and Joe Rocca (10.1 PPG).

The Badgers are looking to get back to the National Championships for the first time since 2008. Brock has won one Wilson Cup OUA Championship (1991-92) and two National Championships (1991-92, 2007-08) in the program’s history.

Cheering the Badgers on in Ottawa will be the best fans in Canada. A fan bus will leave St. Catharines for the nation’s capital Friday morning at 10 a.m. The trip costs $20 per person and includes the bus and tickets to the semi-final Friday and bronze- or gold-medal game Saturday. Accommodations are not included and must be arranged by the students. Trip tickets can be purchased at the Walker Complex Welcome Desk.

Win or lose Friday, the Badgers could earn a wild card at large berth into the U Sports men’s basketball Final 8 in Halifax. On Sunday, a selection committee for the nationals will select the seeding for the championship tournament, but they’ll also select an at-large entry from the teams that didn’t qualify through their provincial championships.
