Students reminded to obey traffic rules on and off campus

The many Brock University students living in the areas neighbouring the main campus are being reminded to respect the rules of the road.

After complaints were made by concerned residents, Brock is taking steps to educate students living off-campus about the need to obey all local traffic laws. One resident said someone she believed to be a student was seen driving past a stopped school bus picking up children while others are often spotted running stop signs and speeding.

Brock has also asked the Niagara Regional Police to closely monitor the neighbourhoods around the campus on Sir Isaac Brock Way.

“I believe effective education reinforced with strong enforcement from the proper authorities is a solid first step in helping the community on this issue,” said Curtis Gadula, Manager, Off Campus Living & Neighbourhood Relations.

On-Campus Traffic Laws

Students, staff and visitors to Brock are reminded that traffic rules must be followed on campus roads, as well.

The speed limit on campus is 40 km/h and drivers caught speeding or ignoring stop signs can be ticketed and charged by Niagara Regional Police. Drivers must pay attention and obey the direction of officers who are lawfully directing traffic during the morning rush to ensure all students and staff arrive safely.

Distracted driving fines apply whether on campus or not. Drivers are reminded that while driving, leave the phone alone.

Pedestrians have the right of way at all marked crossings, and under the new Highway Traffic Act regulations, drivers and cyclists must now stop and yield the whole pedestrian crossover until the person is completely off the roadway or face stiff fines.

Campus Security said anyone caught driving dangerously in parking lots — doing donuts or burnouts, for example — can be sent for disciplinary action.
