Beat the heat with these tips from health and safety

The official summer season only started on June 20, and already there’s been waves of hot, humid weather.

With the humidex on Wednesday, July 6, it felt like 38C.

Health, Safety & Wellness (HSW) urges the Brock community to take some time to review the Heat Related Illness poster to see the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.

Below are some ways to help beat the heat:

  • Keep drapes and shades drawn to avoid radiant light from entering the room
  • Turn off lights, computers and other equipment where practical and safe to do so
  • Wear loose fitting and light clothing
  • Limit the amount of time spent in direct sun
  • Acclimatize and adjust your pace to your work environment
  • Be aware — do not over exert yourself
  • Drink enough liquids before, during and after tasks to support your level of activity. If your activity level is high or you are sweating, you should be drinking 250ml of water or electrolytes every 20 minutes
  • Take a break to cool down if you need it

Being knowledgeable of the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness can assist with applying appropriate intervention before heat exhaustion advances to heat stroke, which can be very serious.

If you are interested in learning more, the Public Services Health & Safety Association and the Ministry of Labour are two good sources for information.
