Brock receives Zika virus for testing; researcher to meet with media Friday

A press conference will be held at Brock Friday morning as scientist Fiona Hunter, one of Canada’s key researchers on the Zika virus, will answer questions about the school’s involvement in Zika research.

Containers of the Zika virus were received at Brock this week from the Public Health Agency of Canada so that Hunter, a renowned entomologist, can lead research on whether Canadian mosquitos are able to become infected and can transmit the Zika virus. Brock is the only university in Canada with a CL3 containment lab that includes an insectiary, which safely allows for this type of research to take place.

Friday’s media conference will take place at 10 a.m. in the main atrium of the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex. It will also be streamed live online at livestream.com/brockuniversity.
