For the first time in nearly a decade, Bob Davis Gymnasium will be converted into a massive concert hall Wednesday night for the signature event of Frost Week 2016.
Canadian DJ duo Dzeko and Torres are headlining this year’s Frost Week schedule, which includes Brock University Students’ Union events from Jan. 11 to 14.
“Outside of O-Week, Frost Week is one of the bigger things we do,” BUSU General Manager Chris Green said. “It gets students acclimated back to campus and we use it a lot as a touch-point to get BUSU on the forefront of students minds because election nominations open Monday.”
Frost Week kicks off Monday, Jan. 11 with a free breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Isaac’s. There’s also free hot chocolate at Union Station from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then a night of music trivia at Isaac’s starting at 6 p.m.
On Tuesday, there’s free David’s Tea giveaways at the base of Schmon Tower, followed by a vendor fair inside Isaac’s from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and then comedy night at Isaac’s starting at 8 p.m.
Wednesday will see a club’s fair held at Isaac’s from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by the Dzeko and Torres concert starting at 7 p.m. at Bob Davis Gym. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door.
Launched in 2008, the duo has performed their progressive house and electronic style at concerts and festivals around the world. Green said BUSU hopes between 800 and 1,000 students attend the concert.
“They have a pretty good following, especially in Canada,” he said. “Everything we’ve heard from other schools is that these guys put on one heck of a show.”
Frost Week wraps up Thursday with a full day of events. There’s an interactive games fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Isaac’s with games such as sumo wrestling and giant snakes and ladders. Then on Thursday night, there’s a café crawl in downtown St. Catharines, as well as the usual Thirsty Thursday’s activities at Isaac’s.
Also taking place Thursday, starting at 2 p.m., is the second annual General Brock Supermarket Sweep. Similar to the old television game show, three Brock students will have 45 seconds to grab as much as they can from the GB store. Whichever student collects the highest value of products will win everything they grabbed, plus the grand prize of a GoPro camera. The contestants will be picked from GB’s social media followers.
