Plenty planned for O-Week

About 18,000 students will be coming to Brock University next week and there’s no shortage of events planned to welcome them.

Whether you’re into dancing, parties, poker or games, there’s something for everyone during this year’s Orientation Week.

The theme of O-Week is Brockchella – and there will definitely be a festival feel with campus tours, barbecues, games and a giant vendor fair.

“It’s a really good chance for the students to get acquainted with the university,” said Brian Horvath, BUSU Vice-President of Student Services. “It’s really helpful to have friends and build a community.”

He said when the going gets tough at school, connections to other students and the BUSU are vital.

The big-ticket concert on Tuesday, Sept. 8 features house music from headliner 3LAU. DJs Grandtheft, Sleepy Tom and DJ Patty V will also perform at the all-ages show being held at Weatherstation Field.

News of the concert briefly crashed the Brock University Student Union’s new website last week.

“There’s quite a lot of excitement about the big-ticket concert,” said BUSU Vice-President of Student Services Brian Horvath.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 students are expected at the bash, he said.

There’s also a lot of buzz about a new feature of this year’s festivities – a glow-in-the-dark paint party on Friday, Sept. 11.

For students new to the school, Horvath said O-Week is a time to meet new people and find out what Brock University has to offer.

While there is no shortage of fun social events, there are also campus tours, a day of volunteering and community events.

Chris Green, Manager of Marketing and Communications for BUSU, said O-Week isn’t just for first-year students. Everyone is encouraged to attend. All of the events are alcohol free and all-ages with the exception of pub nights, he said.

Green said the Brock Cares day of Service on Sept. 12 will introduce students to the Niagara community and allow them to give back.

“Students will do a lot of good,” he said.

Are any guests aloud to accompany a Brock student during any of the events?
