Relay for Life returns June 20

Sarah Salt remembers the first time she participated in Relay for Life in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

“My grandmother is a cancer survivor, and I participated with her two years in a row. To see her walking the Survivors lap, that’s when I really felt that my participation was making a difference,” the second-year concurrent education student said.

Salt first participated in the 12-hour relay five years ago. One of the most poignant moments of the event is the lighting of the luminaries to honour those affected by cancer.

“The paper lanterns with short messages, which adorn the relay course, are also a sentimental reminder of the stories that are being shared among the community.”

The 2015 edition of the Relay for Life happens at Sir Isaac Brock Circle from noon to midnight on June 20. Student Life & Community Experience, which is organizing the event, is seeking volunteers and participants for the event.

Registration is $25 for participants, with a minimum $150 raised. Participants will be fed and receive a lanyard.

The Student Life team is trying to raise $500 for the cause. Donate, register a team or sign up to volunteer online.
