The Brock Badgers captured the Ontario university baseball crown on Sunday, exploding for seven runs in the third inning en route to an 8-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors.

The provincial championship, their sixth in the past 20 years, caps off a stellar first-place finish in the regular season when the Badgers went 30-3 overall, including a 17-1 record against OUA opponents.

“I am so proud of this group of players,” said head coach Jeff Lounsbury. “We had a team goal from the start of training camp to win a championship and we accomplished that. To finish with 30 wins in a single season is also something special that these players will remember.”

For the Badgers, it was their 495th win as a program and fifth time in their 20-year history that they have won 30-plus games in a season.

Brock also won OUA titles in 2002, 2004 and 2010. They captured back-to-back CIBA national championships in 1998 and 1999.

After posting a league best 17-1 OUA regular season record in 2014, the Badgers went 3-0 in the OUA championships.

In the final against Waterloo, the Badgers led 1-0 after one inning and scored seven runs in the bottom of the third to blow the game wide open.

Brock batters collected 13 hits with Phil Steer (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Koddi Quick (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Justin Gideon (2-for-3, RBI), Dan Nicoletta (2-for-5, RBI) and Ryan Laird (2-for-5) leading the way.

Ricky Ferri, Chris Anderi and Ben Kirby all chipped in with singles. Blair Gignac had two RBI in the win.

Brock starter and OUA championship MVP Johnny Hutton picked up the victory, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out one in six innings.

Ryan Beckett, Jeffrey Baggaley and Phil Owen tossed three scoreless innings in relief.
