Brock celebrates Fair Trade Campus Week

One year after becoming Ontario’s second university fair trade campus, Brock Fair Trade is celebrating Fair Trade Campus Week by handing out freebies and educating students.

“Keeping up the momentum is really important for something like fair trade, just so it doesn’t die down,” said Anneka Bosse, Brock Fair Trade Committee student representative and former co-president of Brock Fair Trade. “Getting more products on campus that are fair trade certified (is important). We’re working on that and it would be awesome to get more. But what’s most important is getting into the mindset that everyone should be treated with fairness, decency, and respect no matter which part of the world you’re in.”

Fair Trade Campus Week celebrates the work being done by students, staff and businesses in supporting fair trade and fair trade certified products on campuses across Canada.

Brock Fair Trade will be giving away free fair trade goodies and talking about fair trade in the Guernsey Market from Wednesday, Sept. 24-Friday, Sept. 26 between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.

Students or staff can also send each other personalized bananagrams – a message written on a fair trade banana – by tweeting @FeedBrock.

“Fair Trade Campus Week is about putting a face to a movement,” said Sean McHugh, executive director of the Canadian Fair Trade Network. “We want to spread awareness among businesses and consumers, to help make the case for fair trade. People can show their support by participating in an event or by making the decision to purchase fair trade products.”

There are eight participating fair trade university and college campuses across Canada, and 40 more are working toward their designation. Last year Brock was the second campus in Ontario to receive fair trade designation.

Brock was nominated for Fair Trade Campus of the Year in September, but the award went to Simon Fraser University.

“The Fair Trade Campus Committee and Brock Fair Trade put a lot of work over the last couple of years into the fair trade campus program,” Bosse said. “Being nominated just shows we have been doing a really great job here at Brock, and (proves) our commitment to fair trade. It also shows the rest of Canada we’re here and are part of the fair trade movement.”
