Last month, Brock’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosted a number of middle and high school students for a weeklong math camp.
The camp was designed to expose students to new ways of thinking involving mathematics and to allow those who share a common interest in mathematics to interact.
The camp was organized by Professor Thomas Wolf, who also administers the online Caribou Mathematics Competition. Having participated in math camps regularly as a child he wanted to provide today’s students who enjoy mathematics with a similar experience.
In addition to participating in mini courses, which covered such topics as combinatorial game theory, problem solving and hyperbolic geometry, the campers were able to experience University life. They stayed in residence and enjoyed a variety of social activities that included a movie night and an evening of games at Isaac’s.
They also enjoyed Brock’s athletic facilities as well as activities like rock wall climbing and archery. Another highlight was joining Youth University participants for a magic show, put on by camp instructor Jason Cruz.
Professor Wolf wishes to thank Dot Miners, who served as camp leader, as well as the instructors who not only led the mini courses but also served as role models for the campers.
