Julia Christensen Hughes, Dean of the College of Management and Economics at the University of Guelph and past president of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, will be at Brock this week to share her extensive research on academic integrity.
The renowned educator is currently updating a national 10-year survey on academic integrity and will be the keynote speaker at the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation’s 2014 Spring Perspectives on Teaching and Learning: Supporting a Culture of Academic Integrity, set for Friday, May 16 from 9 a.m.-12 noon at Pond Inlet.
Christensen Hughes was recently interviewed by the CBC as a follow-up to its recent investigation into the incidence of academic misconduct cases in post-secondary institutions of higher learning across the nation.
Brock University was a participant in the 2004 and 2012 Donald McCabe Academic Integrity surveys. These two studies examined attitudes about cheating behaviour and the effectiveness of academic integrity policies on campuses across Canada and the United States. Christensen Hughes, McCabe’s research collaborator, will report on these findings and offer commentary about teaching and learning strategies that support a culture of academic integrity with faculty and students.
An advocate for educational reform, Christensen Hughes’ interests include academic integrity, student-centred learning, curriculum assessment and development, universal instructional design, and organizational effectiveness. In 2010 she co-edited “Taking Stock: Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education”.
The Spring Perspectives event will also include the announcement of the the 2014 Clarke Thomson Award for Excellence in Sessional Teaching.
