Staff share ideas for bringing down the deficit

After this month’s town hall meeting where senior administrators discussed the University’s budget deficit, the Brock community began sharing thoughts and suggestions on a website that was created to examine and track efforts to address the financial problem.

Some of the proposals sent to the ‘Staff suggestions‘ page include voluntary payroll deductions, campus-wide wage cuts and the adoption of unpaid “Rae days”.

The Brock University Outlook website also links readers to budget materials, reference documents and communications updates, including the President’s response to an open lettrer from some of the University’s unions.

The site went live April 9, the same day nearly 1,000 faculty and staff attended, viewed or logged in to the town hall held in the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre. Officials that day outlined steps being taken to cut this year’s deficit from $14.5-million down to $7-million. They said 86 staff positions have or will be eliminated, nearly half of them through voluntary resignation or retirement, but that still leaves an estimated $5.67 million shortfall to be addressed through further steps in the 2014-15 budget year.
