Over 30 graduates from the Sport Management program returned to Brock University recently to share career advice with current students. The second Annual Sport Management Alumni Day featured alumni sessions on topics such as globalization, working in the sport industry, social responsibility and sport economics.

“This event is intended to give students an idea of where they could land in a career within the sport sector,” says Shannon Kerwin, event co-ordinator and assistant professor of Sport Management. “At the same time, it provides alumni the opportunity to promote opportunities that exist within their companies or organizations.”

Other sessions included examining the role of women in the sport industry and graduate studies in Sport Management, followed by a networking social and an alumni executive panel discussion. The executive panel featured a lineup of established Sport Management Alumni, including:

Chris Armstrong – Senior vice president of Wasserman Media Group
Chris Shewfelt – Senior director of Global Partnerships at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE)
Erin Mathany – Manager, commercial rights at Canadian Olympic Committee
Krystle Krasnaj – Integrated marketing coordinator at NHL Enterprises
Kyle Dubas – Soo Greyhounds’ General manager
Session Moderator: Samuel Gliserman (Co-producer at TSN)

“Of the alumni members who were in attendance, a majority of the organizations represented offer internship opportunities for current Sport Management students,” says Emily Allan, the experiential learning coordinator for the Department of Sport Management. “Internships and networking events such as the SPMA Alumni day, truly provide current students with the ability to connect the dots with future career opportunities.”

The event included a silent auction that raised over $600 for the Brock University Chapter of Right to Play. Thanks to the following sponsors for donating items:

• Canadian Olympic Committee
• Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment
• General Mills
• NHL Enterprises
• Brock University Alumni Relations
• Niagara IceDogs
• Hamilton Bulldogs
