For some, the idea of running five kilometres is scary stuff.
Add ghosts and goblins to the mix, though, and suddenly it becomes fun, especially if it’s the third annual United Way Halloween 5K Fun Run.
The All Hallow’s Eve hustle, which includes a walk for those who enjoy a slower pace, happens Thursday from 11:30 to 1 p.m.
New this year is the option to do a 45-minute zumba session in the Walker Complex for those who like to move but want to stay indoors.
Costumes for the run, walk or zumba are optional, but encouraged, said Sandy Howe, who’s helping organize the event.
“We are encouraging the entire campus community to come and have fun – costumes recommended – for a great cause,” Howe said. “The United Way supports a very large number of important programs in the Niagara Region and we want to show our campus’s commitment to seeing that continue.”
Also new this year is the Mystery Boomer contest. Think you know who’s hiding under that badger garb? Buy a ticket and take your best guess. All correct answers are entered into a draw for prizes.
There will also be prizes for best costume, fastest time and most money raised.
To participate, visit the Fun Run online and print off a donation form. A minimum $10 in pledges is required.
Then, prepare your best costume, keeping in mind you do have to navigate five kilometres in it. On Thursday, show up just outside the campus store for registration, which starts at 11:30 a.m. A zumba warm-up for all participants happens at noon, with the run/walk kicking off at 12:15 and the zumba session continuing to 1 p.m.
