Candice Boekestyn

McGraw-Hill Ryerson Limited, a leading Canadian publisher of educational resources, has presented Brock speech language sciences student Candice Boekestyn with one of 20 national scholarships.

More than 500 students from across the country were nominated for the award. According to McGraw-Hill Ryerson, “students are recognized for integrity, engagement and initiative in the classroom.”

Ron Thomson, associate professor of Applied Linguistics at Brock, who nominated Boekestyn for the award, says “Candice is quite rare. I only come across one or two students each year who have the respect and sophistication that Candice has when communicating with her professors.”

“She is honest and trustworthy and always willing to help other students to be successful in a very competitive programs,” says Thompson. “Candice taught herself how to build a linguistic experiment, using specialized software that was entirely new to her. She is very resourceful.”

Prior to coming to Brock, Boekestyn spent time in Costa Rica at the Portantorchas Capernwray Bible School, where she took two semesters of education, including two missionary trips, and did volunteer work at an orphanage and a women’s shelter.

She says when she received the scholarship she was “so excited and very honoured by the award as well.”

Boekestyn has also earned an Ontario Graduate School scholarship to further her education at the University of Toronto’s Speech Language Pathology program.
