The Brock University Students’ Union needs its constituents to vote in two referendums it’s holding on campus this week.

Students are casting votes from Tuesday, March 29 to Thursday, March 31. The question posed is whether BUSU can access $2 million in restricted funds to:

  • renovate Isaac’s Bar and Grill, Union Station food court and Skybar Restaurant
  • secure funding for the first two phases of construction on a new building

The renovations would cost about half a million. The other $1.5 million would go to the new building. BUSU already has permission from the University to start the process of creating the new building, which would be about 69,000 square feet.

The money is in an account for restricted funds, which means BUSU can’t access it without students’ permission. A ‘yes’ vote would grant this.

Renovations to Union Station would add three new vendors. Current plans are for a sushi bar, a shawarma hut/Indian cuisine and a Harvey’s. There would also be a breakfast menu and a “walk-through” window.

Renovations to Isaac’s would include new washrooms, energy-efficient lighting and a newly relocated DJ booth.

Renovations to Skybar would include a year-round patio and a dumb waiter to transfer food from the kitchen to the restaurant.

Possibilities for the new building include:

  • clubs lounge, offices and meeting rooms
  • media centre, including new homes for BrockTV, Brock Press and CFBU
  • new offices for BUSU, the Brock University Students’ Advisory Council and the Graduate Students Association
  • faith and prayer rooms
  • a student justice centre
