Man collapses, dies after rec basketball game

A 22-year-old St. Catharines man died in hospital on Tuesday afternoon after collapsing while playing recreational basketball in the Ian Beddis gymnasium.

Jermaine Oneil Edwards collapsed shortly after 4:15 p.m. Campus Security and Brock athletic therapists rushed to administer CPR and use a defibrillator to try and support him before he was taken by ambulance to St. Catharines General Hospital where he died a short time later.

Edwards was not a Brock student but was a frequent public user of Brock’s phys ed facilities, and a familiar face in pick-up basketball games. He had been using the Walker Complex facilities on a day pass.

A funeral service is being planned for Feb. 4.
