A motorcycle enthusiast in her spare time, Sharon Janzen’s role at Brock is as a geospatial data co-ordinator in the Map Library. In addition to helping users find the maps they need, she works with digital geospatial data and makes it available to users by creating fact sheets, tutorials and web pages. The data is also used by faculty in course work and research. She educates the Brock community about the software options available for mapping, and instructs people on using Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS), Google Earth, Google Maps and other web utilities. The Map Library is a public service for Brock faculty, staff, students, environmental consultants, travelers, genealogists, historians and the general public. “We welcome everyone and do our best to meet your needs,” she said.
Janzen has worked at Brock for 14 years. She lives in St. Catharines with her husband Tim, five-year-old daughter Tamara and pet rat Sammy.
What do you like about your job?
I enjoy the challenge of investigating geospatial data sources and software, especially when the source of the challenge is a Brock member requiring data for a project or research.
What do you do for fun?
I love to ride my motorcycle. I just got my license this spring and I love it. I ride a Honda CBR 125 but hope to upgrade to a Ducati Monster 696 very soon. We’re going to Port Dover for Friday the 13th and I’m so excited to ride my own bike instead of being the passenger all the time.
Where did you go on your last vacation?
This spring we went to Boston. My husband ran the Boston Marathon (and did awesome!) and then we went to Cape Cod for a few days. I LOVE the East Coast; my favourite vacation destination. Our next holiday will be to Indianapolis for the MotoGP motorcycle races at the end of August.
