Giulia Forsythe is special projects facilitator with the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Educational Technologies. She lives in Welland and is an advocate of sustainable transportation. She often travels by bicycle and takes transit whenever possible. She has an “awesome” 10-year-old daughter who, having attended Youth University, Brock sports camps and the Rosalind Blauer child care centre, “feels like Brock is her second home.” Forsythe started working at Brock as a student in 2001, and has been a full-time employee since 2005.

What do you like about your job?

At CTLET we run three-day instructional skills workshops and they can be really transformative, both for me as a facilitator and for the teaching assistants and faculty who attend. The university is the best place in the world to work if you are a lifelong learner. I am never bored. It is immensely gratifying and fascinating to connect and learn with such diverse groups of people all committed to improving their communication and teaching skills both online and face to face.

What do you do for fun?

I like biking, swimming, surfing and tweeting. I like real surfing on water and tried that a few times with limited success. I’m much better at surfing the web. I love having all that wealth of information at my fingertips and through Twitter I’m starting to understand and appreciate the power of personal learning networks.

What was the last good book you read?

The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery. It was a such a intriguing look at philosophy, phenomenology and class systems in France all told in a clever fictitious narrative. It also included the most eloquent defense of why grammar is beautiful and enchanting in such an entertaining way.
